All for one, and one for all
Simplicity is often the key to making any multi-purpose tool really useful rather than being just another gadget. It is exactly that attribute that makes Trend´s ´Multiscribe´ U*MS/PRO marking gauge an absolute necessity for all trades. Kitchen fitting, joinery, flooring and plumbing all require setting out, such as levelling, squaring and scribing operations that usually require a number of individual tools. However, the ´Multiscribe´ lends itself to them all, and you can even use it as a line block for masonry, tiling or stud-work.

Robustly constructed, the ´Multiscribe´ consists of a sliding steel stock precision machined to 45° and 90° angles, fitted to a slotted steel blade machined at one end to a 30° point. The stock is secured by a rebated T-block and thumbscrew to allow quick and precise adjustment either at right angles or in-line with the blade.

Using the Multiscribe
Most woodworking, kitchen fitting and general building operations involve setting out, levelling and scribing, often requiring several marking out tools and gauges. Even a simple project such as fitting a utility unit involves several of these tasks. And, it isn´t only woodworkers that will find the ´Multiscribe´ invaluable, metal workers, welders and engineers will find many uses in the workshop and on site.

Scribing
When transferring profiles, such as when scribing around pipe work or an irregular surface, the point of the blade can be run against the surface to be scribed too, while a pencil inserted through one end of the stock, transfers the contour on to the template material or work piece (i.e. cupboard side, panel etc).
Irregular edges can be scribed too in a similar way. The stock is set in line with blade and either the pointed or the flat end run against the edge, again transferring the contour to a template of hardboard or thin MDF before drawing it in onto the face of the work.
Whether dealing with concave, convex or irregular edges, the ´Multiscribe´ can be set up using either the squared or pointed ends of the blade or stock in any combination allowing profiles to be transferred accurately and quickly.

General Marking Out
The combination of a sliding stock that can be locked at a positive 90°, with precision machined 45° angle, makes the ´Multiscribe the perfect tool for setting and marking out all types of joinery work. Use it as a square, mitre gauge or depth gauge, or use the pencil and pencil point positions for the accurate positioning of screws and fixing for door furniture, hanging brackets, dowels and other fastenings and fittings.
When cutting mortises and pockets or setting the height of saw blades and cutters, the ´Multiscribe´ can be used as a depth or setting gauge. Also incorporated in the stock is a pencil sharpener to ensure that your pencil or lead is kept sharp to ensure fine precise lines.
When marking margins parallel to a straight edge, such as when setting out staircase strings, the stock can be run against the board edge and a pencil point inserted through one of the small tapered holes at either end of the blade. For quick setting, the blade edges are engraved with 5mm and 1/4¨ graduations.

Other uses
With a centre pin inserted through one end of the blade and a pencil through the stock, the ´Multiscribe´ can be used for setting out circles or arcs, the diameter being set by sliding the stock along the blade.

For levelling, such as mounting switches, sockets and other fittings, or for levelling frames, a spirit level is fitted in the stock allowing for vertical or horizontal applications.

For use as a line block, a thin cord can be attached to one end of the blade and the stock hooked against a reveal or ledge, while as a plumb line, the line is attached to the square blade end, the pointed edge being used to determine the vertical plane.
